A Custom Cooling Solution for a Micro ATX Case....

Simple yet Effective...

Micro ATX case is designed for a compact form factor which makes it an ideal and a popular choice among students with less space to spare.

When the inner volume of a computer case is reduced, the components inside the case like the processor and graphics card can start to get hot quickly. Increased temperatures can lead to thermal throttling which indirectly reduces performance. Fans start to spin faster increasing the ambient noise around the system. This makes the Micro ATX case a bad choice for performance machines.

So when the team had a Micro ATX system with extremely high temperatures, they decided to do something about it. Now let us explain what they have done exactly :

1. They sourced two old 5V DC fans from a Computer repair shop. This helped them in two ways, one they got the fans for free and second, they can run the entire setup from the motherboard fan header itself which eliminates an external power source.

2. Now they had to decide how to place the fans on the case. The case had a fan for pulling hot air out of the system but clearly it wasn't enough. Well, it was obvious that the fans will stick out of the case. So the two external fans were placed to push air into the system. The top and the bigger fan was placed in front of the Processor and the bottom and smaller fan in front of the Graphics Card. The outer removable cover of the case is where they decided to mount the fans. So they drew the patterns marked the holes which had to be drilled and used an angle grinder to cut out the patterns.

3. Wiring of the setup was really simple. Now, these are 5V DC fans, that means they need a constant 5V supply for peak RPMs. To achieve a constant voltage, both the fans were connected in parallel.

4. And to reduce vibrations they used rubber washers at all the mounting points of both the fans.

And surprisingly it worked better than they thought. With a zero rupees investment and increase in performance, we definitely recommend you to try it out and let us know about it cause they would love to hear about it.
